Packet Flight: User vs Youtube

This is a visualization of the network packets of a YouTube video, slowed down 12 times. You can clearly see the handshake, some odd client/server negotiation, and the full ramp-up.

Created using Packet Flight: github.com/aristus/packet-flight

Each flying circle represents a network packet. The small green ones are control packets: ACK, SYN, etc. The larger blue ones are data packets.

The data is from a real tcpdump of the first 4 seconds of Rick Astley's music video.

What different sorting algorithms sound like?

This particular audibilization is just one of many ways to generate sound from running sorting algorithms. Here on every comparison of two numbers (elements) It play (mixing) sin waves with frequencies modulated by values of these numbers. Asteroid discoveries over past 30 years visualized

This animation by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center shows a beautiful view of the past 30 years of asteroid discoveries, using data culled by Ted Bowell et al.

View of the solar system showing the locations of all the asteroids starting in 1980, as asteroids are discovered they are added to the map and highlighted white so you can pick out the new ones.

The final colour of an asteroids indicates how closely it comes to the inner solar system. Earth Crossers are Red. Earth Approachers (Perihelion less than 1.3AU) are Yellow. All Others are Green

Notice now the pattern of discovery follows the Earth around its orbit, most discoveries are made in the region directly opposite the Sun. You'll also notice some clusters of discoveries on the line between Earth and Jupiter, these are the result of surveys looking for Jovian moons. Similar clusters of discoveries can be tied to the other outer planets, but those are not visible in this video.

International Year of Biodiversity

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, thanks to a declaration by the UN. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the true value of life on earth… and it’s a call for action. It involves dozens of events and celebrations throughout the year, all with the aim to educate and inspire. With that in mind, the Convention on Biological Diversity is turning to work created by students in the VFS Digital Design program for help. Biodiversity is a motion design project by Roberta Ramalho, Jesse Lang, Juan Carlos Arenas Madrid, and Amanda Healey.
